SEN Adaptive Study Support and Mentoring

Diversity among students of all ages has always been central to my approach to education. In the mainstream classroom, this is often supported through differentiated learning materials and an appreciation of each student’s individual strengths, needs and preferred ways of engaging with learning.

Having worked with thousands of students over three decades, I have found that one-to-one tutoring and mentoring can provide an environment in which students are able to make significant progress beyond difficulties they may experience in a classroom setting.

Individualised support can be particularly valuable for students who find aspects of the mainstream classroom challenging, including those with ADHD, social anxiety or exceptionally high cognitive ability.

Online and In-Person Tuition for Students

A combination of online lessons and periodic face-to-face sessions can offer a particularly effective balance. In-person tuition provides greater scope for varied, interactive approaches to learning, incorporating visual, auditory and kinaesthetic activities where appropriate.

Drama, movement, discussion and creative activities can all be used to reinforce understanding and create tangible revision resources that students can return to independently.

Developing Exam Skills for Highly-Able Students

These sessions can also provide an opportunity to develop concentration, confidence and exam awareness. For highly-able students in particular, the ability to think conceptually and critically does not always translate easily into the structured responses required by examination mark schemes.

One-to-one guidance can help students recognise how their ideas can be developed and communicated in ways that demonstrate their understanding while also meeting the specific demands of the examination.
